CARTMEL NEWS

Someone is guaranteed to be paid out at odds of 499-1 on the winner at Cartmel’s biggest race of the year, the Totepool Cumbria Crystal Hurdle in July.

A sweepstake is being held on the race in aid of St Mary’s Hospice at Ulverston and with a prize of £500 for drawing the winner of the big race on July 20, the holder of the £1 ticket is guaranteed the bumper pay-out.

Cartmel is throwing its weight behind this very worthy cause, one of the biggest charities in the South Lakes after St Mary’s Hospice lost its charity day at the course last season when the August Bank Holiday fixture was abandoned due to waterlogging.

As well as the £500 prize for the winner, there are prizes of £200 for the runner-up, £100 for the third horse, £50 for the fourth, £25 for the fifth and sixth and £20 for any other horse drawn.

The prize money has been donated, so the money from every ticket sold will go to the Hospice, which does fantastic work for people across the South Lakes.

Tickets for the sweepstake will go on sale at the racecourse this weekend at £1 each or £5 a book of five and will also be on sale at the fixtures on Bank Holiday Monday and on Wednesday.
