Cartmel’s Back, Back Again

Following the worldwide COVID pandemic, Cartmel opened its doors to our loyal race-goers in 2021.  Cartmel has been thrilled to resume its full 9 day racing season in 2022 and thanks all race-goers for making this season as fantastic as it has been in previous years. 

Scandal at the Races

In 1974, Cartmel was home to one of the largest racing fraud scandals in the UK. Two racehorses were swapped in a failed attempt to trick the bookies for a sizeable payout on 10-1 odds for racehorse, Gay Future.

New Grandstand

In 2004, a new Grandstand and Hospitality Venue was built. 

Lord Cavendish

In 1974, Lord Hugh Cavendish of local Holker Estates joined the Board of Directors at Cartmel Racecourse.  Such was his love for this quirky little racecourse, he bought the business in 1988 and has transformed it into the venue it is today. 

Going Pro

Pre-war, Cartmel remained a sleepy local course for amateur jockeys.  Under the guidance of Colonel Davy Pain and Major Tim Riley, Cartmel was transformed into a major National Hunt venue, attracting professional jockeys far and wide.

The War Years

Racing was suspended during the war years and almost became the end of racing in Cartmel. 

More Racing Please!

Originally a ‘one day only’ season, the season began extending in 1947 and the August fixture added in the ’60s. More meetings were gradually added to complete our present 9 day summer season.

EY UP, WE’RE JUMPING

In keeping with local farming and hunting populations, racing changes to jumping. Hurdling dry-stone walls, water and anything that can be jumped really… Cartmel remains one of a handful British Mainland racecourses solely dedicated to Summer Jumping. 

Whit Monday Races

Earliest written accounts of racing are from 1856. The racing took place one day a year – Whit Monday which is still a popular weekday fixture today.
