Confidence high for Sunday at Cartmel

June 25, 2021

Despite having to abandon today’s scheduled meeting because of heavy overnight rain, confidence is high that Sunday’s meeting will go ahead.

“It may seem a bold prediction after we had to abandon today, but if the weathermen are right, I am very confident that racing will be on this Sunday and that the going will be no worse than good to soft, soft in places” asserted Clerk of the Course Anthea Leigh.

“I was at the track at 4.45 this morning after waking up to hear the rain falling and we had already had 7ml of rain. By 7.45, just three hours later, it had risen to 17ml and by 10am we hit 20ml.

“This amount of rain had not been predicted and the problem we have is that the front has been swirling around on top of us and not blowing through. And, because we have had no proper rain since before the May meeting, it has gathered as standing water at the low points of the course” she explained.

And she added: “The forecast is for it to clear later today and that we shall have dry weather with sunny intervals for the next two days and, knowing how quickly this track dries out gives me the confidence Sunday’s meeting will go ahead”.

Sunday’s seven-race card features two class two races, the Oakmere Homes Handicap Hurdle over 17 furlongs and the Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase over two miles five furlongs.

Racing gets underway at 1.40pm with crowd numbers strictly limited in line with Covid restrictions so that admission is by pre-paid ticket only
