In a dramatic finale to this season's Hadwins Motor Group Mares Hurdle Series, Iain Jardine claimed the final round with the battling River Icon, but the £1,000 bonus went to Northern Ireland trainer Stuart Crawford.
It could hardly have been tighter as everything was on the line for the two trainers and it produced a thrilling race with Crawford's A Touch Of Sparkle leading into the home straight only to be worn down by Jardine's runner River Icon in the last 100 yards.
It was River Icon's second win in the series and the 12 points she collected took Jardine on to 24, while Crawford, who had been leading the table with 17 points, picked up another six and so was one behind on 23 points.
However, crucially, Crawford had a second runner in Whispering Affair, who finished fifth under Richard Johnson and collected another two points for the trainer to take him to 25 points and the overall victory.
The Hadwins Mares Series is normally a five-race series, but was reduced to four this year after the scheduled first race was lost to the weather on the opening day of the season.
