With the July meeting traditionally Cartmel’s summer barbecue fixture, some of Britain’s top exponents of this form of cooking will be in action with a prize of representing the nation at an international Barbecue Competition in the United States on the line.

“Some of the best Pit teams are taking part in the ‘Frenchs Pit Master series’ to discover which team will head to the Jack Daniels Invitational at Lynchburg, Tennessee in October to represent the UK” said Toby Shea, director of the International BBQ Network.

The International BBQ Network is staging two days of competitions to coincide with the races at Cartmel on Saturday, July 21 and Monday, July 23.

“The Pit Master is the big one and teams will be working through the night on Sunday ready to hand in their dishes to the judges on the Monday.

“But we shall also be running two fast-paced and fun grilling competitions in which contestants get 45 minutes to create a dish from mystery ingredients on a gas barbecue. All you need do is bring yourself as our sponsors provide everything else” Shea added.

And with barbecues a family affair, there will also be competitions for the youngsters with juniors (aged seven to 12) and teens (13-17) having their own competitions.

In addition, for the less competitive racegoers who still enjoy a barbecue at Cartmel, the racecourse is again putting up a special prize for the ‘best-presented barbecue’ at the two-day fixture.

The racing on July 21 gets under way at 2.25pm and the seven race card will be the richest ever staged at Cartmel with £80,000 in prize money with the feature race the £28,000 added Totepool.com Cumbria Crystal Hurdle the most valuable race ever run at the track.

Monday July 23 is Betfair Barbecue Day and with £45,000 in prize money for the seven races and is the second richest day ever. The first race is due off at 2.15pm
